Some people think it’s easy to build a website. There are many website development tools where you can drag & drop pictures and insert wording; however, your website will be set up using a standard, one-size-fits-all template – not uniquely designed to meet your business needs.

Web development requires behind-the-scenes coding that is often completed by web developers and computer programmers. Here’s some reasons why you shouldn’t build your own website:

Reason #1: Technical Support

Do-it-yourself (DIY) website builders may be “free” but if you need technical assistance, you have to pay for it. Professional web developers have the knowledge and resources to do so usually without charging extra fees.

Reason #2: Customization

Website templates and DIY web builders cannot be customized, are very basic, and are not interactive. If you wanted to add an extra feature or extra content, you won’t be able to using a basic website template/web builder. Think about how many websites there are on the web; using a template means your website will probably look exactly like thousands of other websites. There’s no differentiation. How unique is that?

Reason #3: Security

Do you really want to give your customer a virus? Hackers are inserting viruses into thousands of websites every single day – don’t let your website be one of them. Professionally built websites have strong security features attached to them and are able to handle problems if they arise. With so many easy targets ike DIY websites, hackers usually avoid professionally built websites.

Reason #4: Efficiency

Developing a website is hard work, and it takes a long time to build a quality website. You could spend hours and hours trying to build a website rather than spending time on your clients and generating business. Why not let someone with experience and knowledge build it? It will save you time and money.

Reason #5: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Many people know what SEO means but not as many know how to set it up. SEO allows exposure of your website to potential clients which is crucial for business. Your website needs to be appealing to search engines (for example Google).

Reason #6: Not Google Friendly

With a self-built site, Google can’t verify your business in Webmaster Tools. Webmaster Tools can be used to monitor site downtime, crawl rates, broken links, and search traffic.

Reason #7: Poor Analytics

Older scripting technologies (often used by DIY site builders) have inaccurate site analytics. Site analytics are imperative when painting a picture of your websites performance and traffic.

Reason #8: Mobile Unfriendly

Self-built sites, that don’t have a lot of databases or graphics usually aren’t mobile friendly which is critically damaging to companies in today’s world of portable connectivity.

Reason #9: Quicker is Never Better

Your website is usually the first stop that people make to learn about your business. A good website takes weeks to months to build, depending on the size and scope of the project. DIY websites that are created in a couple of hours are never a profitable answer.

Reason #10: No Branding

Without a real domain name, your business will be forced to have an unprofessional URL: “websitebuilder.ca/username”.

Reason #11: Fewer Costs

“Free” website builders are usually not free; you pay a monthly/yearly fee. This fee is forever.

Reason #12: Domain Holdups

If you ever want to switch companies, it may be harder than you think. Your domain name may be trapped with the company and it may be very difficult to obtain ownership from the site builder.
