What Are the Pros and Cons of Social Media Advertising?

Written on .

Social media hasn’t been around very long, but platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have seen exponential growth in recent years. With a combined total of over 4 billion users, it’s no wonder why SNS, social networking site, advertising has become a powerful marketing tool.

Since it’s such a powerful tool, it’s good to know the positive and negative aspects of this kind of advertising. Advertising on social media can be a great way to boost awareness of your business, but it can also backfire and damage your reputation.

In this post from Webworks, I’ll go over some of the pros and cons of social media advertising so you can decide whether it’s the right investment for your business.

Pros:

More Affordable Than Traditional Advertising

Physical billboards can cost up to $1,500 per month and a 60 second commercial can cost at least 10x more. With social media, the cost to run ads is cut in half and there is potential for a wider, more active audience.

Direct Interaction with Customers

This is what social media was made for, connecting people. You can directly interact with customers, respond to feedback instantly, and answer any questions people may have about your business. Actively engaging with people, when done right, can significantly boost your reputation.

Cons:

Trolls and Negative Feedback

One of the tough things to handle on a public forum is negative feedback. If someone has a negative experience, they can post a comment for everyone to see. Along with genuine feedback, some people just like to hurt other's reputations and unfortunately, businesses are sometimes the target.  In a worst-case scenario, someone’s negative experience could go viral resulting in permanent damage to your business's reputation.

It’s Time Consuming

It takes time and effort to reap the benefits of your social media ad campaign. Growing your online presence requires regularly updating your pages content, boosting ad visibility, and interacting with people.

To get the most out of your ad investments, hire someone with strong social media skills to take on the task for you.

Overall, when social media advertising is done right, it can significantly improve your business’s reputation and boost your online presence. If it’s not done right, it can have the opposite effect, in turn damaging your business. To make the most out of your advertisement campaign, regularly update your page with positive content and actively engage with your audience.
